The situation

A construction company of about 20 people ran its business on five disconnected spreadsheets: leads, quotes, scheduling, purchase orders, payroll. They wanted one system, and they wanted it to grow with them.

What I did

  • Started with a small lead-management tool and grew it, release by release, into the platform the whole company ran on: estimating, scheduling and crew calendar, purchase orders, time tracking, payroll, financing, reporting.
  • Integrated QuickBooks and DocuSign; multi-tenant setup with a permission system for office, sales and crew roles.
  • Kept it current through every Meteor release from 1.6 to 3.4 and moved the codebase from JavaScript to TypeScript, both without downtime for the business.
  • Docker, GitLab CI, AWS deployment, backups; the same person on call for nine years.

What came out of it

  • One system instead of five spreadsheets, in daily use for nine years, with the same engineer from the first version to the last.
